League of Northern Democrats confirms Shekarau as chairman

The League of Northern Democrats (LND), a prominent northern political movement, has formally confirmed Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State, as its substantive chairman.

The announcement was made during a pivotal meeting held at the Shehu Musa Yar’adua Centre in Abuja on Wednesday.

The group also unveiled its executive structure and laid out plans for an upcoming summit aimed at addressing critical challenges facing Northern Nigeria.

In addition to Shekarau’s confirmation, the LND named Hon. Emmanuel Jime, a former House of Representatives member from Benue State, as its secretary.

The meeting also established a Standing Steering Committee, to be led by Senator Ibrahim Ida, Wazirin Katsina, and five strategic subcommittees tasked with guiding the movement’s future direction.

Key appointments announced includes Standing Steering Committee, chaired by Sen. Ibrahim Ida (Katsina). His deputy is Ibrahim Biu.

Contact and Mobilization Subcommittee is chaired by Dr. Ja’afar Bello Dambazau (Kano); Programmes Planning & Logistics Subcommittee, chaired by Alh. Danjuma Ibrahim (Sokoto); Media & Publicity Subcommittee, chaired by Dr. Ladan Salihu (Bauchi), who was also appointed as LND’s official spokesperson; Intelligence & Security Subcommittee, chaired by AVM Monday Morgan (Benue), and Events & Protocol Subcommittee, chaired by Amb. Mohammed Hassan (Borno).

The LND has scheduled a landmark Northern Nigerian Summit for November 12-13, 2024, in Kaduna.

The summit will focus on two major objectives: fostering Northern unity, security, and leadership, and developing regional solutions to address the pressing issues of disunity, insecurity, and poverty in Northern Nigeria.

In the press release signed by Dr. Umar Ardo, the convener of the LND, and Hon. Emmanuel Jime, the group emphasized the importance of the summit in uniting the northern region and offering practical responses to its existential challenges.

The LND is positioning itself as a significant force in shaping Northern Nigeria’s future amidst ongoing political, social, and economic challenges.

The group has commenced consultations with all former Nigeria leaders from the North.
