The continued teaching and research facilities development activities efforts of the leadership of Lead City University, the first private university in Oyo State, culminated by the infrastructural expansion and human capacity development ongoing in the institution in the last few years, has yielded the approval of the National Universities Commission(NUC) for the institution to commence MBBS, BDS Dentistry, B.SC. Surveying /Geo-Informatics, degrees in Urban and Regional Planning, Building, Tourism and Hospitality programmes to take effect from 2021/2022 academic session.
Within the framework of operations of the new courses in the institution, the university is fully prepared to receive moral support from other necessary accreditation bodies for the effective take-off of the new programmes, especially in the Health Sciences.
The development also earned the institution the accreditation rights to run some other new courses at Post Graduate Diploma, M.SC, M.Phil. and PhD levels in the university.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Kabiru Aderemi Adeyemo, gave the hint recently during the 14th edition of the institution’s convocation ceremony held to mark the 2020/2021 graduation set of the university.
According to him, the university’s Academic Planning Unit had worked with all the departments in the university to review the curriculum for all the existing programmes in line with the NUC’s Basic Minimum academic standard and the implementation of the reviewed curriculum commenced in 202/2021 session.
He said: “In pursuit of the expansion of the number of academic programmes, the university sought approval from the National Universities Commission to run new postgraduate and undergraduate academic programmes.
“Recently, in response to this, NUC conducted an assessment verification visits to the university, and the result of the assessment gave the university the approval to establish the new academic programmes in the institution.”
Speaking further he said, to meet the academic expansion of the university, about 68 new teaching staff joined the institution, among them were four professors, five Associate Professors, seven Senior lecturers and 45 other lecturers. He noted that quality teaching and learning is the hallmark of Lead City University, stressing that the university has continued to attract highly qualified academic staff to all the departments from various institutions in and outside the country.
“There is a quality Assurance Unit that monitors teaching and ensures that lectures and tutorials hold as at when due. Lead University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and it enjoys all the benefits of the association in full, the Vice-Chancellor said.”
Also speaking in the same vein, the Chancellor of the university, Professor Gabriel Ogunmola, Stated that Lead City University would continue to grow and expand in infrastructural facilities and contents of its academic programmes; and entrepreneurship skills that impact our students and development of our research endeavours, in our bid at producing the much needed Post -Graduate doctoral graduate of high ranking in the nation and globally.
While congratulating the graduating students, he said that the tool with which to make enormous contributions to the nation and mankind are in their hands as they serve with good character.
It was gathered that about 2,052 students gained admission into various undergraduate programmes for the 2020/21 academic session. For the 2021 graduation ceremony, the university presented 1,040 students for the various first-degree awards of the university, where 107 had first-class honours.
