Lawmaker seeks state, federal govt intervention for Obubra windstorm victims

Published by

The member representing Obubra 1 State Constituency in Cross River State, Honourable Ovat Agbor, has called on both the State and National Emergency Management Agencies to urgently provide relief materials for victims of a devastating windstorm in Obubra Local Government Area.

According to the lawmaker, over one hundred and fifty houses were destroyed, with an estimated five hundred victims including women and children in all the four communities affected by the disaster.

“It is very pathetic. Pathetic because when I look at the level of destruction, I wonder how the people are going to fare. One hundred and fifty houses blown off, hundreds of electric poles and transformers destroyed, health centers, schools, and many more valuables all destroyed. It’s indeed pathetic.

“In a few days’ time, schools would be reopening. What is the fate of the children whose school buildings have been destroyed? You can see the urgency of government’s intervention in ameliorating the plights of the people at this point in time.”

Honourable Ovat Agbor, who noted that the victims are currently taking shelter in open fields in schools, churches, and health centers, said the victims are most vulnerable to disease emergencies arising from their exposure to vectors such as mosquitoes, blackflies, tsetse flies, among others.

In this regard, the Basic Rights Council Initiative (BRCI) has called for a quick response to rescue families who lost their homes due to the storm in Cross River State.

The Principal Counsel of BRCI, Barrister James Ibor, in a statement issued Tuesday morning to the press, called on the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the Cross River State Government to rescue them.

Tribune online gathered that the storm, which left several families homeless, occurred on April 2, 2024, in Obubra Local Government Area. Four communities in Obubra Local Government Area are affected, including Wakandei, Obubra Village, Ogada, and Ofonbonga.
