Sylvester Oromoni Jr., a 12-year-old pupil of Dowen College, Lekki, Lagos State, was laid to rest on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the family compound in Ogbe-Ijoh, Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State.
The burial ceremony marks the culmination of over two years since his passing.
Renowned human rights activist Femi Falana (SAN) was among the notable figures present at the funeral rites.
Oromoni Jr. tragically passed away in November 2021 following allegations of physical assault by five of his classmates.
Dowen College refuted these claims, asserting that the boy sustained injuries while playing football with his peers.
However, Oromoni’s family contested the school’s assertion, maintaining that their son had no pre-existing health conditions before the incident.
They opted to keep Oromoni’s remains in the mortuary pending a conclusive verdict from a coroner’s inquest.
Initially, an autopsy attributed Oromoni’s demise to “acute lung injury due to chemical intoxication,” but this finding was later discredited.
Subsequently, the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Lagos released a second autopsy report, concluding that Oromoni died from natural causes.
The legal battle surrounding Oromoni’s death has been ongoing since 2022, with the bereaved family expressing their determination to pursue justice through all legal avenues, including up to the apex court.
During the recent adoption of final written addresses by the involved parties, Mikhail Kadiri, the magistrate overseeing the coroner’s inquest, stated that the court’s ruling would be announced on April 12, after all witnesses had been heard.
“All witnesses have been called, and the ruling is the only thing remaining,” a member of the family said.
“My family decided it was time to bury [him] and say our final goodbyes.”
