LASU abduction: Panel to begin sitting this week

Published by

THE Students’ Disciplinary Committee of the Lagos State University (LASU) will this week commence investigation into the alleged attempt (by two students and a recent graduate of the university) to abduct the President of LASU Student Union (LASUSU), Mr Tayo Sekoni, even as the matter has been handed over to the police.

This was disclosed on Monday by the Dean of Students’ Affairs of the University, Dr Femi Obayori, at a press conference in his office.

“The Committee will begin its sitting in three to four  days,” he said. “Three people have already been named. Definitely more people would be mentioned. Everybody will have to come out and say their own sides of the story. It is a story that is still unfolding. One thing is very clear and very certain. The assault did actually happen. And it happened after two people who were mentioned in that case had been cautioned.”

Obayori who said the university management would not take sides in the matter, but would, instead, support the panel to carry out a thorough investigation, added that it was the policy of the management to make such matters “open”.

It was meanwhile gathered that the attempted abduction was indeed fallout of a factional rift involving the union president and other participants during the national convention of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) held recently at Gombe.

A statement issued by the university at the weekend said two students (Oladayo Mojeed Babatunde and Adebanjo Fatai Adekoya) and a fresh graduate (Fola Kosoko) had attempted to kidnap Sekoni on his way home from school on Thursday.
