As part of its corporate social responsibility, the LAPO Microfinance Bank (LAPO MFB) has awarded scholarships to 180 students in Nigeria.
The scholarships, which are in three categories, range from skills acquisition to secondary school and tertiary awards.
Speaking during the 2023 LAPO MFB Scholarship and Skills Acquisition Award Ceremony in Benin, the MD/CEO of LAPO MFB, Cynthia Ikponmwosa, said the microfinance bank is committed to improving the lives of the people
Ikponmwosa, who was represented at the event by the Director of Corporate Communications and Branding of LAPO MFB, Oluremi Akonde, stated that the scholarship scheme is aimed at supporting the children of LAPO clients and the less privileged in society.
He said, “The LAPO Scholarship Scheme remains an important event within the framework of our commitment to educational development in line with our vision and mission mandate to improve lives.
“I am pleased to inform you that we have 180 new beneficiaries that will be awarded scholarships this year across 34 states where LAPO operates in Nigeria.
“So far, the noble efforts of the LAPO Scholarship Scheme have nurtured the dreams of 3,951 students since its inception in 2007.
“Partners for Development (PFD) has empowered over 200 students within the LAPO Scholarship Scheme since 2014–2023,”, he said.
He added that the microfinance bank, through its skills acquisition programme, has trained 924 youths in various vocations.
Also speaking at the event, the Board Chairman of LAPO Scholarship, Prof. Christiana Okojie, said that LAPO pays over twenty million Naira (N20,000,000.00) every year as school fees for its scholarship beneficiaries.
While maintaining that the scholarship is given on merit to the children of LAPO MFB clients and indigents who are serious in their educational pursuits, Prof. Okojie thanked Dr. Godwin Ehigiamusoe, Founder of LAPO Group, for his persistence with the scholarship scheme.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke separately with our correspondent shortly after the event expressed gratitude to LAPO MFB for the humanitarian gestures, just as they promised to be good ambassadors of the scholarship scheme.
Some past beneficiaries of the scheme took their turn to explain the impact of the LAPO Scholarship Scheme on them, just as they appreciated the scheme.
Some of the new beneficiaries of LAPO MFB include Ogbebor Gospel Osaruwense (fashion designer), Ojor Victory Chinonso (catering), and Eze Philips Udoka (JSS1)
Others are Magnus Eseosa Gift (SS1), Osawe Prosper (JSS1), Samuel Excel Osarosemwe (JSS3), Omokaro Osawese Mary (higher institution), and Macllan Obiora Enwezor (higher institution).
