Management of the Kwara State Polytechnic (KwaraPoly) on Tuesday raised the alarm over activities of suspected land grabbers allegedly encroaching on the institution’s land.
Speaking with journalists ahead of 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 convocation ceremonies of the institution, Rector of the polytechnic, Dr Abdul Muhammed, said that the land speculators have also illegally sold some parts of the polytechnic’s land to unsuspecting members of the public.
“It is very disgusting to report that most of the important land facilities and training farms have been taken over by land encroachers. Illegal private houses are few meters to classrooms, sports arena and other Polytechnic facilities, staff club is now in the centre of illegal private buildings, staff quarters are immediate neighbour to the private building.
“We, therefore, call for immediate intervention of the visitor to the polytechnic to find a lasting solution to this illegality which threatens peace on campus and limits the future expansion of the institution”, he said.
Dr Muhammed also said that the school is planning to opt-out of the national grid of electricity supply due to epileptic power supply to the institution
Accordingly, the polytechnic chief said that it is adopting solar as its major source of power supply.
“This project delighted most affected staffers, especially the medical personnel who make use of touch light for night duty. As such five units of Al 60W hybrid Lam Heed (solar-powered street light) was provided to illuminate the centre at night.
“Another 10K hybrid Inverter was provided to power essential Laboratory Equipment and all the offices in the clinic 24/7. All the medical laboratory testing equipment that has been down for long were repaired to serve the Staff, Students and members of neighbouring communities.
“West-end hostel is currently powered by solar hence out of the national grid. This will gradually be extended to other parts of the campus.”
