Lagos unveils technical support for remodeling distressed buildings

The Lagos State Government has announced a new initiative aimed at supporting developers and property owners in addressing the growing issue of distressed buildings.

This plan is part of a broader effort to enhance safety and improve infrastructure in the state

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, disclosed this in a statement released by the Deputy Director of the ministry’s Public Affairs Unit, Mukaila Sanusi.

Olumide explained that the ministry will extend its role beyond merely approving remodeling plans by offering technical support, with a focus on ensuring safety and compliance in building practices.

He noted that this initiative is in line with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law of 2019 (as amended) and aims to promote building safety and sustainability.

“The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, as mandated by the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2019 (as amended), is willing to extend its responsibility from approving remodeling of existing buildings to providing technical assistance to developers and owners of distressed buildings, especially in the design and remodeling of such buildings,” Olumide stated in part.

He further emphasised that buildings have a lifespan and should be regularly maintained as they near the end of their durability, rather than being neglected until they become distressed or they collapse, which poses risks to a safe and sustainable environment.

Olumide noted that the initiative aims to provide viable alternatives to demolition and tackle the issue of distressed buildings throughout the state.

The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has intensified efforts to ensure that buildings throughout the state are structurally sound, safeguarding both occupants and surrounding structures.

This initiative has taken on increased urgency in light of recent building collapse incidents.

The agency also identifies distressed buildings deemed unsafe, coordinating the evacuation of residents and initiating demolitions where necessary to ensure public safety and maintain structural integrity across the state.

In recent weeks, the Lagos State Building Control Agency has identified several distressed buildings for evacuation and subsequent demolition.
