Lagos to students: Face your studies, shun vices

THE Lagos State government has urged students especially at the primary and secondary school levels across the state to give adequate attention to their studies and also shun all form of vices.

The state’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, gave the advice on Wednesday, at the grand finale of the 2018 Lagos Schools Quiz competition, where the Lagos State Senior Model College, Badagry; Idimu Junior High School, Alimosho, and the Military Nursery and Primary School, Yaba, took the first position at the senior, junior secondary, as well as primary school categories, respectively.

The deputy governor, who at the event, announced a total cash reward, of N2.4 million to be shared equally among the 24 students who made it to the final and another N1.65 million to be shared among their schools according to their levels with the senior schools took N250, 000 each, saying the money was to encourage more healthy rivalries among the students and schools.

On vices to be shunned by students, Adebule listed internet fraud, hooliganism, rape, exam cheating, alcoholism, drug abuse, among others, insisting that students should distance themselves from them in order not to truncate their future.

According to her, Lagos State is very committed not only to provide quantitative and quality education at both the public and private schools at all levels to the people of the state but also ready to support all law-abiding students to achieve their legitimate dreams and aspirations.

She noted that the annual quiz competition and various other extra-curricular activities were yielding great results for the students, teachers and the state as a whole in terms of performance in terminal exams such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations, WASSCE and local and international competitions, promising that the state would continue to make education a priority in her programmes.

She stated categorically that the quiz competition had produced, among others many brilliant students who are today pursuing various courses in higher institutions, broadened the horizon of students, and exposed them to networking and self-confidence in their legitimate activities.

While congratulating all the participants whom she called winners for their efforts, she asked the top three to remain focus in their education and serve as inspirators to their mates.

Earlier in her address of welcome, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye, had said the students were tested in, English Language, Basic Science and Technology, Mathematics, Arts, Business Studies and Current Affairs, based on the importance of the subjects to all students at every level.

She said the competition, sponsors by the state government, was open to all schools across the state.
