Lagos teachers laud new digital teaching guide

Published by

Some teachers in Lagos State have commended the new teaching technology introduced by the state government to make them technologically-inclined.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent who visited some schools in Lagos on Wednesday said that she went through the training reports and also watched the teachers practising with the new tool used for teaching.

NAN reports that the training is tagged: `EKO EXCEL’ (Excellence in Child Education and Learning).

A headteacher, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that in some local government areas of the state such as Surulere, 15 schools were picked out of 70 schools within the local council.

“For Surulere, it was a 10-day training session, which was interesting. It was a total transformation.

“We thought it was the usual training until the technology aspect was introduced. It is one thing to introduce technology and it is another thing to implement it but with a good mindset, it will be accepted.

“We expect to see some constraints but we are confident that it will improve the teaching system and improve the technology knowledge of teachers to teach more efficiently,” the headteacher said.

NAN reports that the tool which is a computerised teacher’s tablet, allows every teacher to sign in within the school’s premises; thereby abolishing daily attendance register and monitoring.

A beneficiary of the training, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the tool also provided teaching guide and work per day for all subjects.

“When we look at it, it is a vision that will survive. Every subject is broken down and guidelines on what to teach and say to the students are all installed in the system.

“With this technology, it will also assist teachers on how to address and encourage students.

“Part of the new tech is called the character board, which shows the participation of a child which can be scored by the teacher, to encourage full participation of other students,” he said.

He urged teachers to embrace the new tool, saying that no teacher would be writing lesson notes as the content of teaching was part of the new technology with accurate timing.

The Lagos State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Adeshina Adedoyin, told NAN that teachers in the state had lauded the state government for the training of 4,800 teachers on digital teaching guide.

Adedoyin said that two batches of the training that would be in four batches had been completed, while the third and fourth batches would take place in April and July.

He commended the EKO EXCEL initiative, saying that the effectiveness of the digital teaching guide could not be ascertained until being used in schools.

Adedoyin, however, encouraged the teachers to utilise the opportunity of the training and make a positive impact on the pupils.
