Lagos tasks property owners on their civic duties

Lagos State government has urged property owners in the state to fulfill their civic responsibility by paying their Land Use Charge and other charges promptly in order to ensure that Lagos continues to excel and its citizens enjoy the laudable programmes of the present administration.

Director, Public Affairs Officer, Ministry of Finance, Modupe Ileyemi, made the call while addressing newsmen in Alausa, even as she said the state government had magnanimously extended the discount window for payment of Land Use Charge to April 14, 2017 to enable residents to further enjoy the discount of 15 per cent on 2017 bills.

“In order to ensure that Lagos continues to excel and its citizens enjoy the laudable programmes of the present Administration, property owners in the State are hereby urged to fulfill their civic responsibility by paying their Land Use Charge promptly,” she said.

According to her, Land Use Charge is a Consolidation of all property and land based rates and charges payable under the Land Rates Law, among others, saying the revenue accrued from these charges are used for infrastructural development in the state.

Ileyemi enjoined owners of properties who had been administered Land Use Charge Demand Notice by the state government to desist from payment of Tenement Rate and Ground Rent in line with Section 22 of the Land Use Charge Law.

The director, however, warned that late payment or non-payment of the charge on an annual basis would attract accrued penalties and accumulation of arrears, adding, “Thus, prompt payment is strongly advised.”

She, therefore, urged property owners to take advantage of the extended discount window and ensure payment was made on or before 14th April, 2017 in order to encourage the government in the delivery of services to Lagosians.
