Lagos surveyors alert residents to fake survey plans in circulation

The recent development by which some individuals were arrested for impersonation has triggered a renewed concern among surveyors in Lagos State who have raised the alarm over fake survey plans in circulation.

Lamenting over the incident, Chairman, Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State Branch, Mr Olufemi Odetunmibi, a fellow of Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), said it has become imperative for residents to be more vigilant to avoid being duped.

Citing the ongoing trial at an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on a case of alleged impersonation and forgery against two individuals, accused of fraudulently presenting themselves as registered surveyors and members of the NIS, Odetunmbi said the case, if pursued to a logical conclusion, is capable of reducing incidences of criminal activities by the quacks, if not completely eliminating them.

He ascribed the frequent and often successful attempt to swindle the public on the fact that people are always looking for ways to cut corners by continuously engaging quacks rather than professionals for their survey jobs. This, according to him, is responsible for the numerous fake land surveys in circulation

While urging the public to develop a new mind set and make conscious efforts to report suspected cases of fake surveys appropriately whenever they come across any, he called on residents to be cautious and to ensure they always engage qualified and registered practitioners for their jobs

“Our attention was drawn to a case where the accused persons were arrested for presenting fake survey plans to the public and were subsequently arraigned by the police at an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Ogudu.

“They were charged for conspiring with others to commit felony, to wit, impersonation and forgery, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

The suspects were also accused of forging a stamp and seal belonging to a deceased registered surveyor to prepare counterfeit survey plans to unsuspecting members of the public, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 365 subsection (1) of the criminal law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
