Lagos records 1,749 fire incidents in 2024

The Lagos State Government on Sunday disclosed that a total of 1,749 fire incidents were recorded in the state over the past year, urging members of the public to always provide information to help reduce fire outbreaks.

The Director General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, made this known during a press briefing jointly addressed by the State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mr. Gbenga Oyerinde, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, and heads of the State Safety Commissions at the Lagos State Fire Service Headquarters in Alausa, Ikeja.

Adeseye revealed that 75 percent of the fire incidents recorded were caused by carelessness. She expressed concern over the tendency of crowds to gather at fire scenes, which often hinders firefighters from effectively performing their duties.

“When we are out to save lives, allow firemen to work. Crowds should be discouraged, and fire officers should be given useful information,” she said.

Adeseye further advised the public to be mindful of activities that could lead to fire outbreaks, particularly during the harmattan season.

She warned against the use of fireworks and cooking inside markets.

“Be aware of what can lead to fire outbreaks during harmattan. Fireworks should be discouraged as they can cause fires, and cooking inside markets should also be avoided,” she added.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service head also highlighted that the state currently operates 22 fire stations and encouraged the public to call the fire service’s toll-free line for assistance during fire emergencies.
