Lagos: Police probe death of man in custody

The police in Lagos State have begun investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man, who was allegedly tortured to death in police custody 

An unidentified relative of the deceased man ,while soliciting justice for him, also accused the police of  dumping the body at the mortuary without contacting the family . 

He said; “This my brother was arrested in his residence at Chevron by an Ikota Police Post officer in Lagos and was detained without committing any offence.

“He died in their custody and they took his body to Epe General Hospital mortuary without contacting his family or anyone. They tortured him to death and dumped his corpse at Epe Mortuary.”

 According to him, the deceased man was arrested on Tuesday, 11th of February on the order of one of his neighbours .

The Lagos police image maker, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, while speaking on the incident, said “Investigations have since commenced. The Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and the complainant are currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba. 

Meanwhile, an autopsy is about being carried out to determine the cause of death, after which further necessary actions will follow. ” 

He assured that “Members of the public are assured that a thorough investigation will be carried out and any person(s) found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
