Lagos PDP to Sanwo-Olu: Extend compensations to other recent disaster victims

Lagos State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has urged the state government headed by Governor Olusola Sanwo-Olu to extend payment of compensation to victims of other recent disasters in the state like flooding, boat mishaps, among others, even as it reiterated it’s called that victims of recent Ijegun fire disaster needed urgent government supports.

PDP said this in a release by its publicity secretary, Mr Taofik Gani while welcoming the recent resolution passed by the Hon. Mudashiru Obasa- led Assembly, directing the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the state governor, Mr Sanwo-Olu, to provide adequate security and logistics for the prevention of pipeline vandalism and hazards.

According to PDP, the prompt resolutions which also included the immediate development of the pipeline areas in the state and provision of adequate compensation to the victims of pipeline vandalism, should also extend to compensation for other recent disasters in the state like flooding, boat mishaps and so on, declaring: “Indeed, the victims of the ijegun fire disaster need urgent Government supports.”

The party, while throwing support for what it described as Speaker Obasa’s prompt attention to the recurring menace, said the resolutions were products of her constructive criticism and outcry immediately after the Ijegun fire disaster.

PDP described the house resolution is progressive, saying such would encourage opposition to be constructive in criticism and become sincere partners in progress.

It, therefore, chided the house not to deviate from this path of check on the executive as Lagosians could have more dividends of democracy in the state “only if the state Assembly stand active, progressive and for the people at all times.”

It would be recalled that coming on the heels of the Ijegun pipeline explosions and the reports of Governor Sanwo-Olu attending AFCON, the Lagos PDP criticised the governor for not visiting the disaster site nor the victims and consequently charged the state Assembly to summon the governor from Egypt to attend to the  disasters in the state at that time.

“Immediately the fire disaster occurred, we specifically counselled the governor to visit the area and the victims; pay the medical bills of the wounded and compensate families of the dead; provide lasting security and logistics to protect the pipeline areas; embark on developing the pipeline areas.

“These have been captured by this house resolutions and we are elated that our constructive criticism is seen as such and so adopted. There is no doubt that if this legislative trend continues, this Assembly may just end up as the best in terms of appreciating opposition’s feedback to make up for executive inadequacies and thereby improving developmental governance,” the statement said.
