Published by

One person was injured on Sunday as tricycle operators clashed with some irate youths at the popular Evans Square in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State.

The police in the state have arrested three persons in connection with the violent clash, which almost escalated into a communal conflict.

The image maker in charge of the state police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement on Monday, said, “The Lagos State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that on 17 May 2025, at about 12:30 p.m., officers of the Adekunle Division received a distress call reporting a clash between some commercial tricycle (keke) riders and some youths at Evans Square, Ebute Metta.

“Consequently, Police Patrol Teams, Tactical Squads, and other police detachments and operatives responded swiftly to the distress call and were able to promptly restore normalcy.”

He confirmed that “One individual who sustained injuries during the chaos was rescued and immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment and is recovering well.”

The Lagos police spokesperson continued, “The Lagos State Command hereby confirms that no life was lost in the incident.”

He also revealed that “However, three of the suspects involved in the disturbance of public peace leading to the unrest were arrested at the scene, detained in police custody, and will be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.”

The State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, has since taken over the case on the directives of the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the root cause of the incident and ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reiterated the Command’s firm commitment to maintaining law and order across the state.

The Command also confirmed that there was no violence related to ethnic clashes or confrontations anywhere in the state.

The incident is not in any way a threat to the peace and security of Lagos State. The fracas leading to the disturbance of public peace in the mentioned location was caused by miscreants and hoodlums who took advantage of the situation and not due to any ethnic divide or grievance.

The Lagos State Police Command remains steadfast in its constitutional obligations to protect lives and property and ensure the continued safety of all Lagosians and visitors to the state.

Parents and guardians are therefore implored to warn and prevail on their children and wards to be law-abiding and desist from getting involved in disturbances of public peace.

Members of the public are urged to go about their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation.
