The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has commended the youths in Ita-Faaji area of the Lagos Island, for their tremendous support in the rescue trapped victims in the collapsed building.
The General Manager, LASEMA, Adesina Tiamiyu, who gave the charge on Thursday in a statement personally signed by him, said, the youths rose to the challenge, even before their first responders came in and commenced rescue of trapped victims.
His statement reads: “I would like to applaud the tremendous effort put in by the youth of the community. They rose to the challenge before our first responders came in and commenced rescue of trapped victims.
“Arriving at the scene we promptly increased the pace and rescued many more lives. Unfortunately we could not save everyone and while clearing away the rubble we discovered some lives that were lost in the collapse.
“The building serves as residential as well as a school for community members. As at the time we ended the search, a lady complained about looking for her child but community members insisted her daughter was seen among the rescued. We have directed her to Lagos Island General Hospital.
“We appreciate the support of Nigerians from walks of life and most importantly foreign missions here who called in to offer support and relief in anyway we needed.
“We have taken note of the issue of crowd control on the scene and in similar situations, we plan to use this experience to do better. We will declare the search closed today and will release figures on the casualties suffered.”
