Lagos govt to commence removal of illegal structures in Ajah

The Lagos state government is set to commence the removal of illegal structures in the Ajah area of the state.

This was revealed by the state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“Following the expiration of the relocation notice served on squatters in shanties built around the Jakande Estate and Maiyegun axis of Ajah, the Lagos State government will, today, commence the removal of the illegal structures to reclaim the coastal road alignment and restore the aesthetics of the area.”

It would be recalled that the government had issued a four-day relocation notice to all squatters occupying illegal shanties around the coastal roads in the Mayegun, Lekki area of the state.

The state government stressed that it has become necessary following the indiscriminate springing up of shanties and illegal structures.

Wahab frowned at the practice of illegally converting residential to commercial premises and unduly erecting attachments to buildings, describing that it was high time for sanity and orderliness to reign across the state.

He stressed that the government would stop at nothing to ensure a livable and sustainable built environment.

“The government has cleared Ijora under the bridge, Obalende under bridge, Apongbon under bridge, Agege Red rail line amongst others. I will like to say that most of these places cleaned up are notorious sites that harbour criminals and as such they are threats to residents. The clean-up exercise would be sustained to ensure that ejected squatters do not return to rebuild these shanties” he said.
