The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government area, threatening demolition of their structures if they fail to comply with regulatory requirements.
In a statement released on Tuesday by Ekundayo Alebiosu, Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, the government announced that contravention notices have been served to over 280 illegal structures, including completed buildings, under-construction sites, and undeveloped lands.
The notices demand that the occupants provide relevant documentation and approvals within seven days to justify their occupation. Failure to comply will result in a demolition notice.
The Mayegun Waterfront Scheme has been subject to a detailed technical assessment by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development’s survey team, which found that the properties lacked the necessary government approvals for their construction.
Alebiosu emphasised that the government aims to prevent the creation of slums, ensure adherence to the Lagos State Master Plan, and protect the state’s coastal areas from erosion.
Alebiosu urged property owners to either voluntarily remove their structures before the notices expire or come forward to regularise their documents to avoid penalties.
He warned that all illegal activities along the waterfront schemes and corridors must cease immediately, as the state government will not tolerate encroachments on government properties and setbacks.
Additionally, the Commissioner revealed that the state government is also addressing similar encroachments at the Okun Ajah waterfront scheme and assured that efforts will continue to safeguard the state’s waterfront infrastructure and ensure the safety of life and property along the coastal areas.
