The Lagos state government on Friday, February 2, arrested a sewage evacuation truck driver for unlawfully discharging fecal matter into the drainage system, causing environmental pollution within the Amuwo Odofin Housing Estate, Mile 2.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunboh Wahab, announced the incident on his official X-handle account.
Wahab revealed that the driver has been formally charged and is currently held in custody, awaiting sentencing scheduled for Tuesday, February 6, as determined by the magistrate.
Furthermore, Wahab emphasised that the truck’s owner will also face legal consequences as they are set to be brought before a criminal prosecution in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management Protection Law of 2017.
This legal action against both the driver and owner underscores the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and maintaining a clean and sustainable living environment. The court proceedings for the truck owner are scheduled for Tuesday, February 6, 2024.
