Lagos govt arrests eight minors, nine others for street begging

The Lagos State Environmental Task Force on Monday, December 16, 2024, arrested 17 individuals, including eight minors, for engaging in street begging across various parts of the metropolis.

The operation targeted those contributing to public nuisance, particularly in traffic hold-ups along major routes in the city.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the arrests in a tweet, stating, “The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce on Monday, 16th of December, 2024, monitored and carried out a special purpose operation against persons constituting public nuisance across the metropolis.”

The operation focused on patrolling key areas such as Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Burdillon in Ikoyi, and the Lekki-Ajah express corridor in Victoria Island.

Wahab further explained, “Major routes including Alfred Rewane, Osborne, Alexandra, Burdillon in Ikoyi and Lekki-Ajah express corridor in VI were well patrolled to arrest and ward off destitutes and miscreants causing public nuisance in the areas.”

He noted that the 17 individuals arrested were involved in the unlawful act of street begging during traffic hold-ups.

The commissioner confirmed that the suspects, including the minors, would be transferred to the appropriate government facilities in line with enabling laws.
