Lagos bye-election: Afemikhe emerges PDP candidate for Surulere

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its primary on Monday to elect Jerry Afemikhe as its candidate for the forthcoming House of Representatives bye-election held in Surulere Federal Constituency 1, on February 3, 2024, to fill the seat vacated by former Speaker, Hon Femi Gbajamiala.

Gbajabiamila is currently serving as the Chief of Staff (COS) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Afemikhe, popularly called Olori Odo, emerged victorious, polling 17 votes from a total of 18 accredited ad hoc delegates in a free and fair process conducted by the party’s Electoral Committee led by Mohammed Mainasara Ahmed and monitored and supervised by Independent National Council (INEC) officials and security agencies.

Members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of the party, led by the State Secretary, Hon. Soji Orioye, were also on the ground to witness the primary exercise.

Afemikhe will, come February 3, 2024, be contesting against candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Fuad Laguda, and that of Labour Party (LP) flag bearer, Adeola Adebanjo, among others.

Speaking after his victory, Afemikhe expressed his strong commitment to serve all the communities under Surulere Federal Constituency 01, saying that he would deploy his experiences to offer dynamic leadership in addressing the diverse needs of the constituency.

Afemikhe said he would work in line with his campaign slogan, “Join me, let’s empower our people,” urging the good people of Surelere Federal Constituency 1 to join hands with him to enable him to deliver the dividends of democracy to them.
