Lagos abolishes career progression promotion for performance appraisal

LAGOS State government on Tuesday that it has jettisoned promoting civil servants based on career progression for performance appraisal as part of efforts aimed at ensuring efficient service delivery in the state.

The State’s Head of Service (HoS), Mrs Folasade Adesoye, disclosed this at a briefing to announce activities to mark this year’s Public Service Week, themed, ‘Transforming Governance to Realize the Sustainable Development Goals.’

The Public Service Week kicks off on Tuesday and will end on Monday.

The HoS said it was the reason the state government launched a growth mindset philosophy to replace fixed mindset to institutionalise optimisation of service delivery, pointing out that all government officials now have clearly defined job schedules against which their performance would be assessed in an open, timely, effective and efficient manner.

“To this extent, all government officials now have clearly defined job schedules against which their performance will be assessed. This approach is based on the perception that governance must be open, timely, effective and efficient,” she said.

Adesoye, while commenting on the Public Service Week, said the celebration was introduced in 1994 following the resolution of Conference of African Ministers of Civil Service, which obliges all African countries to set aside 23rd June as the Public Service Day to recognize the value of service to humanity.

According to her, some of the activities to celebrate the week include a parade cum exhibition by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Visit to Charity Homes, Orphanages, Old Peoples’ Home and Rehabilitation Centres, Variety Show tagged ‘Alausa Has Got Talent’ Season II, Medical screening and Walk for fitness.

“The Talent Competition will be among Public Servants in Lagos State. The range of talents expected to be showcased includes Singing, Dance, Gele Tying/Make-Over etc. Games such as Ayo, Draughts, Ludo, Whot Cards; Singing; other forms of entertainment such as Mock News Presentation, Stand-up Comedy, Ewi, Mimicking of any personality and display of skill and dexterity on local Drums such as Gangan; among others.

“Health Day – ‘Health, they say, is wealth.’ To continue its commitment towards ensuring good health for its workers, the state government has set up stands where medical screening of different ailments like hypertension, Cervical/Breast and Prostate cancers, Diabetes, Eye Test and Hepatitis will be conducted. The screening will be performed free of charge on this day at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Alausa-Ikeja by 10.00a.m. Specialists in the medical field will be on ground to provide expert advice on health-related issues as well as the management and prevention of illnesses and common diseases,” the HoS said.

Adesoye said the climax would be the dinner to be hosted by His Excellency, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to honour outstanding public servants in appreciation of their dedication and diligence and their contribution to the landmark achievements in the state.
