Lagooz Schools students shine in 2024 African Maths Olympiad contest

Two students from Lagooz Schools in Lagos, Demilade Kadiri and Chetachi Mbalu, won gold and bronze medals, respectively, in this year’s Africa Mathematics Olympiad competition held recently.

Demilade, a JSS student, emerged as the overall best in Lagos State and third best nationwide, scoring 95 per cent, while Chetachi, who is in SS2 class and scored 80 per cent, won third place nationally.

There are no fewer than 112 schools from across the country, including the Federal Government Academy, Niger State; International School, Ibadan; Maryland Schools, Akwa Ibom; St. Patrick College, Delta; Christ High School Abuja; Incubators Academy, Kaduna; and Ferscoat Academy, Lagos, and so forth.

Lagooz Schools made this disclosure on Tuesday in a statement personally signed by its founder, Yomi Otubela, who is also the National President of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS).

According to Otubela, the exceptional performance of the two male students in the competition was not only a display of sheer brilliance and dedication by the students but also a great testament that the college offers quality education and fosters a culture of excellence and healthy competition.

He said the entire Lagooz School community was proud of them and also congratulated them on the achievement.

He promised that Lagooz Schools would continue to promote a culture of healthy competition and excellence not only in academic subjects but also in extracurricular activities, adding that the effort is aimed at producing a well-rounded and fit-for-purpose workforce.

The Africa Mathematics Olympiad competition, according to organisers, is aimed at using mathematics to solve societal problems and also encouraging healthy competition among African youths, especially in secondary schools.

The competition is being organised in Nigeria annually at the state and national levels, with the winners representing the country at the continental level.
