CJ Obasi’s gangster film, ‘O-Town’ and Joe Brown Ubaka’s award winning ‘The Missing God’ have been announced as the opening and closing films of the maiden Lake City Film Festival (LACIFF) happening at Crystal Lake Resort, Oguta, Imo State from December 16 to 18.
While ‘O-Town’ set in Owerri tells the story of a young man who aims to climb the ladder of the small-town criminal underworld to become the boss of all, ‘The Missing God’, made in Igbo language, focuses on the power of African religion, culture and traditions.
Speaking at a news briefing last Friday in Surulere, Lagos, the founder of the festival, Ekine Stronghold, explained that the films were “strategically chosen to give people a sense of belonging and to tell guests they should come with their best film next year because our best can match your best.”
He added that culture, arts, history, tourism and environment will be proudly showcased at the festival of indigenous movies he conceived in 2010 but is now just actualizing.
The national public relations officer of the Screen Writers Guild of Nigeria disclosed that over 2, 900 entries were received from 105 countries but that only about 50 will be screened during the three-day festival.
Judges including Sani Muazu (head jurist), Yinka Ogun, Bond Emeruwa, Kathy Kasic from the US and Tari West-Johnson, are already assessing the entries that would be screened, added the content creator and writer.
Aside film screenings; there will be master classes on cinematography and editing courtesy Ford Foundation. The facilitators, Stronghold disclosed, are coming from the US and Europe.
Asked the uniqueness of the festival, Stronghold said: “It is a film festival with high tourism content. Oguta is a beautiful tourist destination and the home of Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, Flora Nwapa, Dr. Alban and Clem Ohaneze who is the official face of the festival. Guests should come prepared for three good days of quality films, fun and water based activities including water skiing.
Partners of the festival include the Imo State Government, Ford Foundation, Crystal Lake Resort, Africa International Film Festival and Oguta Youth Empowerment Scheme amongst others.
