Labour Party to reposition for active opposition role

The Chairman of Labour Party, Mr Abdulkadir Abdulsalam

THE Labour Party (LP) has resolved to reposition itself to enable it to play a more boisterous opposition role in the country.

The decision was reached at a meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) at its national secretariat in Abuja on Monday where it was also resolved that the leadership should undertake a nationwide tour of its state chapters to ascertain their level of preparedness for the role.

A communique released at the end of the meeting attended by all National Officers of the Party and presided over by the National Chairman Comrade Mike Omotosho noted that it reviewed the state of affairs of the party and its readiness to play opposition role.

The communique observed that the bane of Nigeria was lack of good, visionary, proactive and innovative leadership over the years.

It assured that LP was in a better position to provided the necessary leadership to meet the needs of the people and therefore enjoined Nigerians to embrace the party.

The communique added: “The NWC-in-session reviewed the state of the party affairs and resolved to reposition it to play a major opposition role especially now that 2019 general election is approaching.

“Consequently, the National Leadership will be embarking on a nationwide tour to ascertain the true state of affairs in the states, local government and ward levels with the view of organizing State Congresses which will engender vibrant, articulate and dogged leadership at all levels through democratic process as part of our efforts to promote internal party democracy.

“The NWC believes that labour party is the only party with programs, ideology, philosophy and manifestoes that can confront the myriad of challenges of Nigeria’s socio-economic problems including eradication of poverty, hunger, unemployment, insecurity amongst others.

“The NWC-in-Session notes that the bane of Nigeria’s problems is lack of good, visionary, pro-active and innovative leadership that lack deep capacity over the years to annex the vast human and natural resources to reposition the country for growth and sustainable development.

“We, therefore, call on Nigerians, workers, organizations and all progressive elements in the country to embrace the party in order to create a new dynamic, proactive, visionary and knowledge-driven leadership in Nigeria.”
