Labour commends Buhari approval of pension payment to ex-Biafra Police officer

The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government Owned Companies  (SSASCGOC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari, for approving the payment of pension to police officers who served under the Biafra Police during the civil war, about 50 years ago.

The union said in a communique issued after its Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting, held in Calabar, that the action has shown that President Buhari, who fought on the side of the Federal Government during the war, is a father to all.

Justifying the union’s commendation, the President of SSASCGOC, Comrade M.A. Yunusa and the General Secretary, Comrade Ayo Olorunfemi, who signed the communique said the issue of security is germane to life and property of every citizen.

Besides, he stated that anyone who has once used arms can out of anger pick up arms again.

“For this reason, we commend President Buhari  for this important approval,” adding that the government  should also improve the issue of pension generally in the country.

SSASCGOC said: “The CWC-in-Session called on the Federal Government to improve on pension matter and save pensioners the trauma they go through after retirement. This will give the workers who are still in service hope, and as well go a long way to curbing corruption and age falsification by some workers.”

It urged the Federal Government to take steps to reposition the economy with a view to reducing the present hardship and high level of poverty in the land which has led to all manners of criminality and agitations.

The  union also advised the government to reinvest the recovered looted funds on basic amenities for the benefit of all Nigerians.

SSASCGOC further appealed to the Federal Government to facilitate the operation of the Nigeria Railway Corporation for mass movement of people and goods to reduce the pressure and carnage on Nigerian roads, saves lives and properties.

It said the Federal Government should also ensure that the issue of monetization  of staff quarters is resolved and staff severance packages paid prior to the concession of the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
