Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kyari, has called for more collaborative efforts and partnerships for the country to attain its aspirations for gas utilisation.
He made the call on Monday at the 2nd Biennial International Conference on Hydrocarbon Science & Technology (ICHST) held at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Conference Centre, Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State.
Speaking to the theme: Optimising Gas Utilisation & Energy Transition for Sustainable, Mallam Kyari said such efforts and partnerships should be driven by enabling policies and favourable business environment.
He said with the abundance of natural gas and 206TCF oil reserves, the country has enough to “support developments such as new gas-fired power plants and more than enough to make gas a viable fuel for existing and new industrial facilities.”
Affirming the Federal Government declaration of the ‘Decade of Gas’, starting from 2021, the GMD, who was represented by General Manager of Nigeria Gas Company (NGC), Engr. Emmanuel Igbokwuwe, averred that the Nigerian energy transition was anchored on the use of gas, which has remained a key component of the global energy mix.
He urged educational institutions, such as PTI to dutifully play their role in the gas decade by evolving innovative ideas in line with the emerging energy landscape.
“Research, Technology and Innovation Division is poised to deliver transformative initiatives for NNPC and this will be done through close collaboration with great institutions such as the PTI which I know is already ongoing.
“NNPC will continue to drive economic transformation using gas by embarking on projects and initiatives in collaboration with its JV Partners and relevant stakeholders to deepen gas supply and utilization,” Kyari affirmed.
Chairman of the Nigerian National Committee of the World Energy Council (NNC-WEC), Professor Abubakar Sambo, in his presentation titled Energy Transition in Nigeria: The Role of Capacity Building Institutions, described the conference theme as apt at a time the Petroleum Industry Act was signed into law and the conversation on energy transition as a pathway towards the transformation of the global energy from fossil fuel-based to zero carbon by 2050 gaining much support.
He charged PTI to build capacity programmes that’ll prepare the country for the expansion of the use of LPG for domestic use, service sector, and agricultural services.
Speaking earlier in his welcome address at the two-day conference attended by oil and gas experts across the country, Principal and Chief Executive of PTI, Dr Henry Adebowale Adimula, underscored the conference as one that’ll examine the gas revolution and proffer solutions to gas-related issues.
Dignitaries, most of whom are panelists present at the opening ceremony of the conference, included oil and gas guru, Professor Wumi Iledare, President of PENGASSAN, Engr. Festus Osifo, General Manager of NAPIMS and Mrs Uzoamaka Martina Atuchi, among others.
The conference, which ends Tuesday, will witness three sessions of presentations of papers with the panelists moderating.
