Kwara: Islamic group decries ritual killings, calls for parental responsibility

Published by

Muslim clerics and traditional rulers have been urged to intensify efforts in enlightening the youth against the get-rich-quick syndrome, which is becoming increasingly prevalent in society.

The spiritual leader (Amir) of an Islamic organization in Kwara State, The Companions (Ilorin District), Mallam Ismail Okunlola, made this call in a statement condemning the recent brutal killing of a final-year student of the College of Education, Ilorin, Hafsoh Lawal, by a self-acclaimed Islamic cleric, Abdulrahman Bello.

The organization emphasized the importance of family values, unity, and community responsibility, stressing that the culture of neighborliness—where community members can discipline errant children—should be revived.

The statement urged Nigerians to strongly reject the pursuit of wealth through illegal means and advised parents to fulfill their responsibilities in properly raising their children.

Furthermore, it called on the government at all levels to ensure the swift implementation of judgments passed by competent courts, particularly in murder cases. It also urged governors to sign such judgments without unnecessary delays.

The statement highlighted the need to reform the curriculum of traditional Arabic/Islamic schools. It suggested that periodic seminars should be organized for Islamic teachers (Mallams) to enhance their ability to monitor students’ studies effectively, with active involvement from parents.

The Amir of the organization also advised young people to avoid acts that could jeopardize their future or tarnish their family’s reputation.
