Kwara government commends pensioners

Kwara State government has commended pensioners in the state for their cooperation, saying the development is the result of the existing peaceful industrial environment between the government and the union.

Speaking at the delegate conference of the state council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, said that the pensioners had put in their best during active service, adding that the state government will not pay lip service to their demands and problems.

Represented by the Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Labour Matters, Alhaji Mumini Onagun, the governor said that the state government will grant their requests which include 1 per cent deduction of the state allocation for the building of the union’s new secretariat, consequential adjustment on the minimum wage and other requests, assuring the union that pensioners in the state would laugh at last in no distant time.

He also pleaded with them for their continued understanding and cooperation to the government, promising that the government would jack up allocation being released monthly for the payment of the retirees’ gratuities.

Also, both the chairman, of the Local Government Service Commission and the executive secretary, of the Local Government Staff Pension Board, who praised the state government for its concern for the pensioners by increasing the allocation on gratuities from N30 million to N100 million, said that efforts are on to increase the amount.

They poured encomiums on the state chairman of the NUP, Comrade Saidu Oladimeji, for his purposeful leadership and humility and for allowing peace to reign in the union and with the government.

They urged pensioners at the local government level to move closer to their Local Government Councils executives, who he said would in turn will inform them of their problems and demands.

In her own address, the state’s Head of Service (HOS), Mrs Susan Modupe Oluwole, represented by Alhaji Yusuf Ibrahim, commended the leadership of the union for creating unity, love and understanding among the three tiers of government in the state and enjoined them to continue in the same spirit in order to have a strong body and achieve their desired goals.

Mrs Susan Oluwole also commended the matured posture of the union in airing their views and demands from the government which she said has constituted in no small measure the peaceful industrial environment being enjoyed in the state.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman, Kwara State Branch of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji, expressed happiness of the Union for the level of cooperation between it and the government with particular reference to the way the governor handles payment of monthly pension and allocation of fund for the payment of gratuity during his tenure as he also expressed the pleasure of the union for the working cordiality and dynamic assistance received from the office of the Senior Special Assistant on Labour Matters.

All members of the outgone executive were endorsed to serve the union for another period of four years and they include Alhaji Saidu Oladimeji – Chairman, Mr Ajayi Joseph Yemi – Vice Chairman, Mr Shaba Ndatsu Joseph – State Auditor Alhaji Raimi Kola Olagunju – Treasurer, Mrs Oyinlola Phebean – Trustee I and Alhaji Yisa Ishola Salami – Trustee II.

Certificates of return were later presented to the new officers.
