Kwara communities devastated by rainstorm seek aid, intervention

Residents of the Igbanna community in the Oyun local government area of Kwara state have called on governments, good-spirited individuals, and organisations to come to their aid to mitigate the effects of the recent rainstorm in the area.

The Tribune reported that the residents of the area were thrown into anguish and tears as a heavy rainstorm had devastating effects on several buildings.

The incident, which was confirmed by the state fire service, had it that the rain, which fell for only a few minutes, was accompanied by heavy wind, thus causing damage to property.

The Tribune learned that victims of the natural disaster are currently counting their losses in the community following the havoc caused by the rainstorms, during which the rooftops of several houses were blown off.

Speaking after an on-the-spot assessment of the disaster, the national president of the Igbanna Descendants Development Union, IDPU, Chief A.S. Salami, described the occurrence as highly devastating.

“The experience is worrisome. Few houses, if any, were left untouched by the storms from the heavy rain. Some houses were completely blown off, while a good number of our people’s houses were either brought down or badly damaged.”.

Salami also said that “the incident is unprecedented in history as the stock of the disaster is so great to the extent that most of our people are in confusion and will hardly find where to sleep.”.

As we speak, the economic and normal lifestyle of the entire community has been grounded, as the vulnerable victims of the disaster are at a loss as to what to do or where to put their heads for safety.

In view of this, members of the community are calling on the government and good-spirited individuals and organisations to promptly come to the aid of the community.
