Kunle Afolayan claps back at critics, celebrates global recognition, filmmaking legacy

Nollywood actor, producer, and director Kunle Afolayan has addressed his critics while celebrating his career achievements. Taking to Instagram, the celebrated filmmaker shared a compiled video showcasing his national and international recognition, underscoring his journey and accomplishments in the film industry.

The video captured moments of Afolayan’s career milestones, including interviews with international media outlets, invitations to prestigious events, and highlights from his remarkable entry into filmmaking. Reflecting on his journey, the Anikulapo director shared his pride in his body of work and his identity as a Nigerian filmmaker.

Afolayan revealed that his journey to becoming a filmmaking powerhouse was unconventional. In one of the clips, he noted that he originally studied accounting and had a successful career in the field before transitioning to acting and ultimately directing.

The video also showcased some of his critically acclaimed movies, including Figurine, October 1, Omugwo, Mokalik, Citation, Anikulapo, and Naija Christmas.

In his post, Afolayan emphasised his commitment to creativity and individuality. “I am a creative, I like to build, and I mind my own business,” he stated. He further declared that he is not in competition with anyone, choosing to focus on his personal growth and artistry.

“I am not in competition with anyone but myself. My name is Kunle Afolayan. I am a filmmaker, and I am a Nigerian,” he affirmed, sending a bold message to detractors while celebrating his craft.

The filmmaker’s confident message and creative showcase have drawn admiration from fans and colleagues alike. Many took to the comments to applaud his achievements, praising his unique approach to storytelling and his dedication to elevating Nigerian cinema.

Afolayan’s influence extends beyond his films. Months ago, the director shared a touching moment with his children, revealing their heartfelt prayers after he paid their school fees. Screenshots of their loving messages flooded social media, further endearing him to fans as a devoted father.
