Kogi LG shuts down market over insecurity

Published by

The Ijumu Local Government Council in Kogi State has shut down the Iyara Zango Market, a cattle market, due to insecurity concerns.

Alhaji Haruna Ibrahim, the Executive Chairman of the Local Government, confirmed this in an interview with newsmen on Friday.

The closure follows intelligence reports that kidnappers and other criminal elements have been using the market to carry out their nefarious activities.

It was gathered that after the closure of Zango Markets in some parts of the state, especially in Kogi Central, the criminals moved to Iyara.

The Council Chairman stated that the market will remain closed until further notice, as security agencies have been mobilized to enforce the order.

He noted that he has been mandated by the State Governor, Alhaji. Ahmed Usman Ododo, to eradicate criminal elements that give the local government and state a bad image through kidnapping and banditry activities.

According to him, the safety of the people of ljumu and travelers remains his priority, and anyone or group frustrating government efforts will face the wrath of the law.
