As it is becoming clearer that the local government election in Kogi State will be held shortly, the chairmanship aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ijumu Local Government Area have appealed to the state governor, Yahaya Bello, to consider the people of Ijumu-Oke, as it is their turn to produce the chairman of the local government area.
The aspirants, who are from Ijumu-Oke, made the appeal at the weekend at a meeting held in Ogidi, the residence of one of the community leaders and former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Chief Dada Fehinti.
In a communiqué issued shortly after the meeting, the aspirants said: “We are appealing to our amiable and peace-loving governor to discourage what is clearly a mischievous attempt by anyone who is not from Ijumu-Oke to subvert the peaceful coexistence among the good people of Ijumu kingdom.
“We want the governor to consult widely with Ijumu traditional rulers, opinion leaders, Ijumu Development Union (IDU) and other stakeholders to ascertain the community that is supposed to produce the chairman in the next local government election in the state. We are saying it without mincing words that any aspirant who is not supporting the aspiration of Ijumu-Oke people is against the age-long rotational ethics in Ijumu Local Government Area.
”The chairmanship aspirants declared that if the governor wishes, and for the love he has for the incumbent local government administrator, Alhaji Taofik Isah, he may renew his appointment, saying the Ijumu-Oke people would wait for their turn instead of backing him to context in the coming local government election so as to sustain the peaceful coexistence among the good people of Ijumu kingdom.
The aspirants also resolved to adopt a consensus candidate so as to have a peaceful and resounding victory at the polls.
While charging the people of Ijumu-Oke to remain calm and be law-abiding, the aspirants condemned the way someone is using the names of the governor and his deputy as the standing authority, saying that the duo have given him the green light to contest.
Some APC stalwarts of Ijumu-Oke extraction who attended the meeting include Aminu Olanrewaju, Ogale Aduge ward; Ibileke Olufemi, Okoro Igah ward A; Hajia Moriamoh Salami, Okoro Igah ward; Oyewole Solomon, Ogale Adige; Ogungbamiwa Sesan, Okoro Igah ward; Chief Shuaib Ipinmisho, Igbolare/Ilare ward and Dr Toyin Kamaldeen, Igbolare/Ilare ward.
