Keeping bread fresh

This is a period that most homes need to learn means of preserving food, especially common household staples like bread, so that it can remain fresh and curb wastage.

As popular as bread is, whether store-bought, bakery-fresh or homemade, it has a considerable weakness; a short shelf life.

So it either grows mold or gets stale and hard. The most important thing to note is that bread lasts longer when stored in cool and dry environments. When bread is in a relatively air-tight environment, it lasts longer because circulation speeds up the staling process

There are many simple ways of keeping bread fresh; store it in plastic wrap, a reusable zip-top plastic bag or a bread box, avoid storing bread in damp, airy locations, which can speed up molding and freeze if you’re not going to eat the loaf in two or three days. You can thaw and eat when ready; frozen bread is good for up to three months if properly covered in plastic wrap and placed in zip-top bags.

Saving fresh bread has basic procedures; divide the loaf or divide them into slices after it has completely cooled, leave a section out in room temperature and keep remaining portions for long-term storage, then, cover the rest of the sections separately and tightly in plastic wrap.

Store-bought bread lasts five to seven days while homemade bread is good for three to five stored at room temperature. So invest in a breadbox, wrap bread in plastic because it is a reliable short-term method to storing bread, ditch the bread bags and use the original wrapper

Note however that the longevity of bread depends on the type of loaf, its ingredients, and preservatives.
