The Nigeria Customs Service, Kebbi State Command, has reported a noteworthy accomplishment in revenue generation despite the closure of land borders with the Niger Republic.
In the month of July, the Command was able to generate an impressive revenue of N99.25 million.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Command Headquarters in Birnin-Kebbi, the State Comptroller of Customs, Dr Ben Oramalugo, shared insights into the commendable revenue generation efforts undertaken by his team across the Command’s jurisdiction.
Dr Oramalugo acknowledged that the coup d’état in Niger and the subsequent border closure with the affected West African country have significantly impacted the Command’s revenue generation objectives.
Addressing the issue of anti-smuggling measures, the Customs chief emphasised that a direct correlation exists between higher revenue generation and more effective suppression of smuggling activities.
He underscored that the Command’s officers and personnel remain vigilant and motivated, leading to the seizure of twenty-eight items during the month of July.
The seized items for the review month encompassed a range of contraband, including 138 packs of 225mg tramadol, 81 tablets of cannabis sativa, 46 bags of foreign parboiled rice weighing 50kg each, and 40 bags of rice weighing 25kg each.
Additionally, the Customs team confiscated 88 bales of second-hand clothing, 4,200 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), 525 litres of diesel, and 37 containers of vegetable oil, among other items. These seizures cumulatively amounted to a value of N51.43 million.
