The vice chancellor of KolaDaisi University-Ibadan (KDU-I), Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, has urged the Federal Government to extend the proposed loan scheme to cover all the tertiary institutions in the country, be saying ‘it is the products that will eventually transform the society.”
“The scheme should not be restricted to the federal universities alone, but spread to cover many homes where financial support is needed. I believe there is a need for extension,” he stressed.
The vice chancellor stated this on Monday at a press conference organised by the institution as one of the activities marking its third convocation ceremony.
According to him, the institution is set to turn out another set of 123 graduates at its third convocation, out of which 12 have emerged with first class.
Professor Olatubosun stated that the 12 First Class graduates, whom he noted had consistently performed brilliantly from the beginning till their graduation from the university, had enjoyed the university’s scholarship scheme which rewards excellence among the students.
Giving the breakdown, he said five of the First Class graduates emerged from the Computer Science Department, three from Micro Biology Department; two from Mass Communication Department, and also two from the Business Administration Department.
He added also that 50 of the graduates will be graduating with second class upper division, 39, second class lower division and 22 with third class division.
The VC who noted that the university is blessed with a working Board of Trustees (BoT), under the chairmanship of Professor Adeniyi Osuntogun, as well as the current pro-chancellor and chairman of Council, Mr Remi Babalola, a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the registrar, Mr Olawale Haruna Adetu, an astute administrator is also ensuring that it operates with best standards befitting a modern citadel of learning.
While stating that private universities are critical to the success of higher education in the country, he said “it is obvious that the government cannot continue to meet all the needs of higher education in the country and this much has been shown through the significant contribution of private universities to the system.
In its determination to achieve a world-class university, he hinted that the university had, in the last one year recorded more laudable achievements which he highlighted to include: partnerships and developments with relevant institutions such as, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Lagos, Foreign Service Academy, Lagos, Commercial and Industrial Security Corporation (CISCO), Academy Chartered Institute of Management Accountant (CIMA) and Princeton Publishers, as well as other physical development in the areas of infrastructure.
In addition to the 24 programmes currently being run by the institution, the VC disclosed that the National Universities Commission (NUC) had granted the approval to run another five new programmes, namely B. Sc. Nursing, B.Sc. Medical Laboratory Science, B. Sc. Public Health, B.Sc. Human Physiology and B. Sc. Human Anatomy.
He appreciated the founder of the institution, Chief Kola Daisi, CON, for his huge investment in the university, and his determination especially at this crucial time of resource scarcity even among government establishments.
He also lauded the current members of staff and students, imploring them “to keep the ball rolling and not rest on your oars in lifting the university into greater heights.”
He appealed to the graduates to be good ambassadors of the university wherever they find themselves saying, “I implore you to be that light that will project your alma mater’s shine for the world to see.
