Kayode Sanni, a Petroleum Engineering graduate from the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), has been recognised for his exceptional service during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in Anambra State. His dedication earned him the prestigious Certificate of Outstanding Service.
Assigned as a Mathematics teacher at Community Secondary School, Igbakwu, in Ayamelum Local Government Area, Kayode quickly realised the academic challenges students faced. Rather than adhering to routine teaching methods, he took proactive steps to enhance their learning experience.
To spark students’ interest, he introduced homework programmes, extra lessons, and in-class competitions. He also implemented a reward system to encourage participation. His efforts led to unprecedented success in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), marking a turning point for the school.
Recognising the impact of his initiatives, Kayode extended his efforts beyond his assigned school by spearheading an inter-school quiz and debate competition, involving multiple secondary schools in Ayamelum LGA.
With the assistance of fellow corps members, the competition became a major event, igniting a newfound enthusiasm for education among students. The contest concluded with awards for top-performing schools and students, earning widespread praise from parents, teachers, and education authorities.
For his leadership in organising the event, Kayode was appointed Chairman of the Debate and Quiz Committee. His commitment to fostering academic excellence did not go unnoticed.
Beyond the classroom, Kayode demonstrated his passion for community service in another impactful way. He identified a dangerous road in the village where frequent accidents occurred, posing a serious threat to residents.
Realising the urgent need for intervention, he collaborated with corps members skilled in structural engineering and architecture. Together, they assessed the road conditions and devised a safety solution.
Kayode then led a fundraising campaign to construct speed bumps at critical points. His determination and teamwork paid off, resulting in a 50% reduction in accidents, making the road significantly safer for the community.
The success of this project earned him further recognition. He was appointed Chairman of the Speed Breaker Committee, a testament to his leadership in addressing community challenges.
In appreciation of his service, the NYSC honoured him with the Certificate of Outstanding Service, recognising both his contributions to education and his life-saving road safety initiative.
