The Katsina State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) on Monday said it would build five additional primary schools in Daura Local Government Area to reduce the number of pupils in the classrooms.
Alhaji Nuruddeen Lawal, the Education Secretary of the local council area, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Daura, Katsina state.
He said that the schools would be located in rural communities of Binga, Rijiyar Malam Ibra, Damfa, Dannakola Fulani and Kaya.
Lawal said that the additional schools would increase access to education and decongest the classes.
He said that the girl-child enrolment into primary schools had increased by 55 per cent in the area.
“We are able to achieve this with the cooperation of our traditional and religious leaders.’’
He said that the area had a total enrolment of 30,244 pupils, with a total teachers’ strength of 963, adding that additional teachers were required for effective performance.
Lawal warned the teachers against laxity, truancy and lateness to work, noting that no erring teacher would be spared, while merit would be rewarded.
The secretary said that academic activities had resumed in schools with about 90 per cent attendance.
According to him, the inspectorate unit has also commenced supervision and inspection of schools.
Lawal commended Alhaji Lawal Buhari, the Chairman, SUBEB in Katsina State for his open-door policy and effective supervision of schools.
He said that SUBEB had renovated many schools in the area and equipped them with befitting furniture.
“I equally commend the free gift of school uniform policy introduced by the chairman,’’ Lawal said.
NAN reports that Daura Local Education Authority had achieved 78 per cent pupils’ enrolment in primary schools this year.
