Kano NDLEA arrests 1,016 drug suspects

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano State Command has reported that in the past year (2023), the command arrested a total of 1,016 suspects involved in various drug-related crimes, 40 of whom were females.

Additionally, the command’s efforts have resulted in securing 102 convictions, with 104 pending cases before the Federal High Court.

According to the State Commander of NDLEA, Abubakar Idris Ahmad, these arrests have dealt a severe blow to the illicit drug trade, disrupting the operations of criminal networks and ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.

Moreover, the command has recovered an impressive 9,128.572 kg (9 tons) of narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances through tactical offensives on drug peddlers and interdictions of their consignments.

This seizure includes 6,097.879 kg of cannabis sativa, 1,695.774 kg of psychotropic substances, and 1,334.919 kg of other illicit substances, including cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine.

He added that one woman was sentenced to 5 years, and a man to 10 years in prison for different drug offenses.

In addition to enforcement actions, the command has prioritized the rehabilitation and support of individuals struggling with addiction. Through targeted programs and initiatives, a total of 70 clients have successfully undergone rehabilitation, equipping them with the necessary tools to reclaim their lives from the clutches of drug dependency.

As part of our efforts to restore hope for families and victims of drugs, 1,459 persons referred by investigation and other stakeholders were counseled by the Drug Demand Reduction professionals of the Command.

Within the period under review, over 15 tons of assorted Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances from decided cases and other seizures were publicly destroyed by the Command, on an occasion witnessed and participated in by well-meaning individuals across all spheres of society.
