Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf unveiled the distribution of free fertilisers worth over N1 billion to smallholder farmers, including women and people with disabilities, in the state on Thursday.
This initiative aligns with Governor Yusuf’s campaign promise to transform agriculture by providing quality and affordable agricultural inputs, as outlined in his 70-page blueprint titled “My Commitment for Kano.”
Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Kano, confirmed the initiative in a statement.
The statement highlighted that the distribution of N1 billion worth of NPK fertilisers to 52,800 smallholder farmers across the 44 local government areas was produced by the state-owned Kano Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO).
During the flag-off ceremony, Governor Yusuf explained that the aim of this initiative is to reduce production costs and enhance food security.
He also mentioned that the state executive council had approved the procurement of over five billion naira worth of fertilisers, which will soon be available to Kano farmers at subsidised rates.
Governor Yusuf emphasised the government’s commitment to sustaining food production through the regular supply of fertilisers produced by KASCO.
He stated that KASCO and other state manufacturing centres are being strengthened to revitalise revenue flow and sustain the state’s economy.
The beneficiaries, including women farmers and people with disabilities, are expected to receive 25 kg of NPK fertiliser to support their farming activities, ultimately boosting crop yields and improving livelihoods.
