Kano: Deposed Emir Sanusi’s portrait resurfaces, sparks fears of leadership change

Published by

The resurfaced portrait of the deposed Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, appears at the coronation hall, creating fear in the minds of Emirate councils and residents in the state.

Allegations have arisen that there is a clandestine plan to remove the incumbent Emir of Kano, Dr Aminu Ado Bayero, and reinstate the sacked Emir Sanusi.

It will be recalled that the former governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Gabduje, was the one who sacked Emir Sanusi and also created four additional Emirate councils, making a total of five in Kano state.

The State Emirate Councils, created by Governor Gabduje’s administration, include Rano, Karaye, Bichi, and Gaya, with the Emir of Kano as the Chairman of the State Councils of Emirs.

Speculations have arisen that the appearance of the deposed Emir of Kano at the main coronation hall is a game plan to test the reaction of residents of the state, as there is believed to be no smoke without fire.

Despite the state government’s repeated denials of moves to reinstate Sanusi, the recent resurfacing of his portrait at the coronation hall is causing mixed reactions among the populace.

However, the state government swiftly responded to the rumours, stating that there is no truth in the speculation that the governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has arranged to remove Dr Aminu Ado Bayero and reinstate the deposed Emir Sanusi.

The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Comrade Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, clarified in a statement made available to the press on Monday that the history of the coronation hall is synonymous with Malam Muhammadu Sanusi.

According to him, “The history of the coronation hall is synonymous with the 14th Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi because it was built for his presentation of the staff of office after he was crowned as the Emir, succeeding late Alhaji Ado Bayero in 2014 during the administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“So traditionally, his picture shall remain there forever. Bringing back the picture of the 14th Emir is part of the ongoing rehabilitation to give the coronation hall a facelift,” he further clarified.
