Kajuru killings: We do not want reprisals

Painfully, many woke up a few days ago to the news of killings in some parts of Kaduna State. Unfortunately, the Kaduna State government has confirmed the killing of 66 people in Kajuru Local Government Area of the state.

The government, in a statement on Friday by Samuel Aruwan, spokesman to Governor Nasir el-Rufai, said among the victims were 22 children and 12 women, adding that four wounded persons rescued by the security agencies were receiving medical attention.

He said security agencies had been deployed to the area, while some  arrests had been made. The statement did not give details of how the incident took place, but it was learnt that the killings occurred following a bloody clash between the Adara and Fulani communities in the area.

Sources said the problem started on Sunday night when gunmen suspected to be Fulani invaded Angwan Barde, an Adara community, and  killed 11 people, with several others injured.

On Monday, angry youths in the community were said to have embarked on reprisal attacks, leading to the bloodshed. Arunwan said security agencies had recovered 66 bodies.

No nation on earth can make any significant progress if lives of citizens are not protected. I am using this medium to appeal to those affected not to get involved in  any reprisals. Taking lives has never done anyone any good. Yet the governmens at all levels must wake  up and do the most significant job in their mandates. This is the protection of lives. Any government in any part of the world, which fails to protect its citizens, has failed totally.

We must join others in condemning the killings in Kaduna and united demand that the value that we place on human lives must be respected. Our nation should not be reduced to a killing field where we have no sense of safety. All security agencies must go after those responsible for the massacre. The already tensed political atmosphere is worsening our cohabitation. Therefore, we must not become pawns in the hands of those who desire our annihilation.

Rotimi Eniola,

Akure.
