Kaduna school: 6 on admission, 57 students discharged due to cholera outbreak

FOLLOWING the outbreak of cholera at Government Girls Secondary School, Kawo, Kaduna on Monday that left one dead, six of the students are still on admission while 57 others have been discharged.

The state Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Doctor Paul Manya Dogo disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking in an interview.

He said the state government and supporting partners have been able to put the situation under control, saying,”I am just leaving the hospital where the children were taken to. The situation has been brought under control and a lot of them already discharged.

“63 of them were admitted to the facility but only six of them are remaining and the hospital management has assured us that they too may be discharged today.

“Sadly, one of them died at a private hospital where her parents had taken her to. That I think happened on Friday and it pained us.

Corroborating what the Commissioner earlier said, Chief Medical Director, General Hospital Kawo, Doctor Oyelami Akintunde said, the students were responding to treatment and several of them have been discharged.

According to him, “they brought 42 on Monday morning and another 15 that same Monday night. They also brought six on Tuesday morning totalling 63. Many of them have recovered and discharged and even the remaining six will be discharged today.”

One of the survivors (names withheld) appealed to the state government to come to their rescue as facilities in the school are nothing to write home about.

“We have toilets but no water. Out tanks are not working so people dedicate anywhere they can find. The wells we are using too are not healthy but we don’t have an option for now.

“We don’t also have a darling set to eat our food. They serve our food while we seat and eat on the bare floor. The government need to help us to avoid a repeat”, she appealed.
