The impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared himself the authentic Speaker of the House, saying he has resumed his position as the parliament leader.
Obasa made this known on Thursday after returning to the Assembly Complex under the protection of police and State Security Service operatives.
“I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” Obasa said.
According to him, he was never, at any point in time, impeached as the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly.
He noted that while he is not against being impeached, such a development must follow the due process of democracy.
He said, “As I am here, it simply means the house is on. I have told you repeatedly that I have never been removed. There was nothing like impeachment. I have said this openly: impeachment, removing, or what it is called, is undemocratic, unconstitutional. In doing that, you must follow the due process. Nobody is against that. I am not against being removed; if I do that, I am not being democratic. All I am saying is that let’s go through the normal process.”
He continued that he still has the full support of his colleagues, describing them as loyal and committed individuals ready to serve the people of Lagos at all times.
“I don’t have anything against anybody. All my colleagues have always been my brothers. They have always been loyal and dedicated, with a strong commitment to serving the people of Lagos, and we will continue to do that together. I have no reservations, nothing against anybody, and no intention of victimization.”

It was his first time back since his removal on 13 January 2025.
Obasa arrived at the complex with more than 11 police officers and headed straight to the Speaker’s Office, ignoring his colleagues, who were seen deliberating in the Assembly’s garden before his entrance.
His return follows a dramatic turn of events at the Assembly, where the security details of the new Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, were reportedly withdrawn.
Tribune Online reports that police escorts assigned to Meranda had been removed with immediate effect, leaving both the Speaker and the Assembly complex without formal security cover amid the ongoing crisis.
