A Chieftain of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), Hon. Damilare Abioro, has called on political leaders in Nigeria to work out a model of Democracy suitable for the country.
According to him, the current Democracy being practiced in the country is no longer realistic and sustainable to bring the expected dividends to Nigerians.
Abioro, in his Democracy Day message to Nigerians, asked Nigerians, especially the political class to use the occasion of June 12 celebration to reflect on democracy in this current dispensation.
The politician explained that there is need for the political leaders to brainstorm on the model of Democracy suitable to address the challenges facing the country.
He added that the current situation in the country required both the leaders and followers to make some sacrifices for the country to progress and overcome the obstacles.
According to him, “The aims of our founding fathers, especially those who made the supreme sacrifice for the return of democracy following the military takeover must be realised.
“this is the time for the elected leaders in the position of authority to make this journey seamless, through good citizenship, patriotic service as well as sacrificial and exemplary stewardship.
“The political leaders must work together despite the differences, accommodate our diversity and prioritize policies that will impact the lives of the citizens.”
Abioro said that the current political leaders must work out any system that guarantees political inclusion and promotes unity and tolerance in the polity
