Executive Chairman of Bogoro Local Government Council, in Bauchi State, Iliya Habila has called on working Journalists in the state to be advocates of peaceful coexistence among residents in the state.
He also advised them to always abide by the ethics of the profession and avoid sensationalism in their reportage but be agents of social change in the society which is part of the tenets of the journalism profession.
The Chairman gave the charge at Bogoro, headquarters of the Council when he received a delegation of members of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council led by its Chairman, Comrade Umar Sa’idu while on a visit to the area as part of activities to mark its 2020 Press Week.
He said that Journalists as purveyors of news, information, education and entertainment content, should arrive to ensure that there is peace and security in the society as it is the basic ingredients for development stressing that no development can be made in a chaotic environment.
Iliya Habila said that “Your pivotal role in connecting societies together, the surveillance role and vantage position of setting agenda for the society are unique roles that you must deliver in the most responsible manner if our society will attain the development zenith which we aspire.”
He added that “As leaders whether at the federal, state or local level, the first and paramount responsibility of government is to ensure the security of lives and property of citizens. When this is achieved, then a conducive atmosphere for development will have been created. While it is the duty of every citizen to contribute to the attainment of this peaceful and secured environment, we as journalists are at the forefront in this onerous task.”
The Council Chairman then called on Journalists to be rural reporting minded because according to him, “there are a lot of things to report about at the grassroots, people at that level need to be exposed to the outside world for attention.”
While highlighting some of the achievements of his administration at the council, Iliya Habila said that the Council under his leadership has assisted over 200 women and Youths across the local government with cash ranging from N10,000 to N15,000 for small businesses, adding that the Council also trained 70 women on maternal, neonatal and child health.
In the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), the Chairman said that the Council has provided improved VIP latrines in public places, rehabilitated water facilities and repaired over 100 boreholes as well as empowered communities to embark on hygiene and sanitation activities.
He also said that school enrollment has increased in the area because his Council is committed to quality and efficient education for the children saying that it is collaborating with all education-related agencies for such.
The Chairman also said that his Council has been able to maintain peace and tranquillity because of the harmonious relationship among the people saying, “our traditional and religious leaders are doing everything possible to make sure that people tolerate each other and live together.”
He then commended the leadership of the NUJ for finding it expedient to come to the Area as part of the 2020 press week saying that it will remain indelible in the minds of the people of the area.
