Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has urged Deltans to join him to flush out what he termed successive the “pervasive ruin” of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.
The representative of the Delta Central Senatorial District made the plea on Thursday during the public declaration of his intention to contest the governorship election in 2023 under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The well-attended declaration was held at the open ground of the campus of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State after a visit to some royal fathers.
Omo-Agege, who reeled out his parliamentary and constituency achievements, said the same courageous feats, which will serve as a model, could be replicated to save the state from the ruin of the ruling party and build a new Delta.
“Proud of our historic parliamentary achievements, I believe that we can apply the same model to save our beloved Delta State from its present pervasive ruin and rot that sum up the sustained bad governance, ineptitude, and disorderliness of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in our state.
“We must save ourselves because the PDP does not represent our true character and values.
“It is time to restore sanity to our political leadership space, and we will do so, no matter what PDP does because this time is different,” the Orogun-born lawyer boasted.

He accused the PDP of grossly mismanaging the resources of the state, bowing to usher in a new phase of leadership in the state if given the chance.
“Having reflected and prayed fervently for God’s guidance on the state of our dearly beloved state, I am, like many of our people, convinced that for our greater good and the sake of future generations, it is indefensible to abide in comfort zones while the PDP unrepentantly accelerates the destruction of our state.
“I am also convinced that I can mobilise our great minds from all walks of life to add great value to the governance of the state we love so much.
“We can stop the continuing slide towards existential disaster. We can build a legacy that all our people and future generations would be truly proud of.
“Without question, our dearly beloved state is headed in the wrong direction and losing grounds in the comity of states. The PDP has made Delta a non-participant in the race for modern development by smart states in our country.
“The PDP does not care about our own people. They have turned their backs on civil servants, pensioners and retirees, business people, professionals, artisans, students, women, and our youths.
“No vision, no action, no compassion, no responsibility. Just policy paralysis, corruption, greed, neglect and clannishness.
“The PDP has clearly badly governed our state by mismanaging our treasury, squandering our oil and non-oil wealth and corrupting our values.
“They have impoverished Deltans and held our people down from achieving their full potential. Violence, brigandage, cultism and all sorts of mafia-style behaviours now reign freely.
“Merit, professionalism and decency for which Deltas are known in the past have been jettisoned. Our values of respect, handwork, integrity and self-worth are being deliberately eroded. Immorality is widespread. Our people are frustrated and angry about PDP’s colossal waste,” he lamented.
He, therefore, promised to usher in a New Delta on “four pillars of Employment and Empowerment, Development, Good Governance and Enduring Security (EDGE) to run on functional and adequate public infrastructure. This is a new covenant with Deltans.”
Earlier, in his welcome address, Chairman, Organizing Committee of the ceremony, Dr Otive Igbuzor, opined that Omo-Agege’s declaration is a premonition of the end of the struggle of Deltans from the 22 years of PDP’s stranglehold.
A chieftain of APC and former general secretary of NUPENG, Chief Frank Kokori, in his remarks, expressed optimism that in his lifetime, “I am going to see a change in governance in Delta State that will liberate the people from PDP and I am happy that the liberation will come from my very own.”
Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Edward Onoja, in his remarks, who was wowed by the mammoth crowd in attendance, declared Ovie Omo-Agege as the “new governor of Delta State” in waiting.
Other APC chieftains at the colourful event replete with cultural dances and comedy, included Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Chief O’tega Emerhor, Chief Tega Edewor, Chief Ayiri Emami, Hon. Francis Waive, Chief Ede Dafinone, Prophet Jones Erue, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, among others.
