Jimmy Carter: US Embassy in Nigeria to be closed today

The United States Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos will temporarily close on January 9, 2025, to honour the late Jimmy Carter, former US President.

The US Mission to Nigeria announced the move on Wednesday in a statement shared on its X account.

Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at 100, served as the 39th US President from 1977 to 1981. Known for his dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights, Carter also authored numerous books and conducted significant peace negotiations.

The statement reads: “The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in honour of former President Carter’s passing.

“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights.
