Jigawa, World Bank enrol over 36,000 girls, Almajirai into schools

NO fewer than 36,800 out-of-school girls and Almajirai have been enrolled in special primary schools in Jigawa State under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) project.

This was disclosed by the chairman, Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Muhammad Ayuba in a speech delivered at a farewell debate among JSS 3 students of Girls Child Right Advocacy Club of Kude Model Junior and Primary school in Dutse Local Government in Jigawa State.

The debate was organised by the Save Children International (SCI) through INSPIRING project and supported by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) 

The SUBEB chairman represented by the director of quality assurance in the board, Alhaji Hamisu Ilya, said “the universal basic education board with the support of the World Bank has had so far enrolled 36,800 out of schools children both boys and girls across the state”.

According to him, “Under the BESDA project, SUBEB established 920 centres and enrolled boys whom mostly Almajirai and girls who were street hawkers all over the state.”

Alhaji Hamisu Ilya assured that Jigawa State government will continue providing free girl child education in the state.

Also speaking, the Chief of Party of INSPIRING project, Dr Adamu Isa represented by the child health specialist of SCI, Hajiya Mairo Musa said the debate aimed at creating boldness and raising voices against girl child abuse or molestation.

Musa said, “This will make them an advocate of child right especially girls child and  more awareness on how to protect themselves from any attempt by whoever the person indiscriminately of the relationship.”

She maintained that the debate will also create awareness to the participants on antenatal and postnatal care, pneumonia, malaria and cholera diseases, as well as to give more light to general public on how important girl child education is in the society as according to her “educating girls is educating the entire family.”

The debate highlighted the importance of attending anti-natal programmes, as well as how girls can avoid child abuse.
